Health Plan of Nevada (HPN) and Sierra Health and Life (SHL) have developed these clinical practice guidelines for the clinician's use in managing common and important medical conditions.
All clinical guidelines have been developed by HPN and SHL providers, allowing for extensive input from practicing physicians. In most cases, nationally recommended guidelines provided the basis for the HPN-SHL guidelines, which were then modified to fit our local environment. The guidelines are reviewed regularly.
The guidelines constitute a framework only. In all cases, the provider's clinical judgment can override the guideline if the provider feels that strict adherence is not in the patient's best interest. If the provider decides to deviate, the medical record should indicate the rationale for this variation.
Compliance by HPN and SHL providers with the HPN-SHL Clinical Guidelines is monitored by chart review and utilization data. Information relating to guideline development can be obtained from the Quality Improvement Department at 702-242-7064.
