Garden Tomato Caliente! Is it a drink or a meal?

New tomato juice

You control the heat!

Tomato season brings with it a large selection of multiple varieties, from cherry and Roma to beefsteak and heirloom. Whatever your preference, there are plenty of things you can easily make to get the most out of tomato season. If you haven’t tried it yet, our easy marinara sauce recipe will have you opting out of store-bought brands.

Here, we bring you a new take on a classic drink that might be more like a meal than just your average beverage. The ingredients come together to add a zesty zing to the tomato juice base, but the garnishes make this drink more like lunch. The hot sauce lets you control how much heat you want to add!

If you have some extra time on your hands, you can make your own tomato juice from any of the simple recipes found on the internet. Here, we used a low-sodium store brand since so much of the flavor comes from the added spices.

Ingredients:

  • 32 oz. low-sodium tomato juice
  • ½ cup of your favorite salsa (use chunky for a thicker base)
  • Juice of 1 lemon • Juice of 1 lime
  • 1 tablespoon olive or pickle brine
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp grated horseradish
  • 1 tsp celery salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • Hot sauce to taste Add all ingredients together and whisk or blend to desired texture

Now for the fun part. Pour about 6 ounces in a tall glass filled with ice and choose your favorite combination of garnishes from our list below and create your own culinary work of art:

  • Celery stalks
  • Cherry tomatoes
  • Green olives
  • Marinated pepperoncini
  • Pickles
  • Carrots
  • Bacon slices
  • Lemon or lime wedges
  • Marinated asparagus or cauliflower
